Gina’s piece appeared in print about a week later, accompanied by a photo of Hally, his image taking up half-a-page, his tropical blue-green eyes staring out at the world daring everyone to disbelieve him. Her story was a bit of a departure, more thoughtful, almost meditative, relatively speaking, ultimately more Jonathan Livingston Seagull than René Descartes, but still, a bit of an anomaly for the tabloid, though not without the customary sensational elements, including the suggestion in vivid hyperbolic terms that Hally was special, that he was somehow important to the world.

As a stylist, Gina was big on catchy sobriquet. She referred to Hally as the Reluctant Messiah. She described him as the Accidental Savior. She even gave me a title: the Purveyor of Wonderment.

“You want to read this?” Hugh said to Spark when he got home from his day on the boat.

“Nope,” Spark said, walking straight through the kitchen, then the living room, bounding up the stairs two steps at a time.

“Ad copy,” Pastor Ragnar sniffed, archly enacting his revenge against Gina, as Hugh read aloud. “Though marketing, like propaganda, does have its place.”

“Anyway, who cares?” Hally said, biting into a green apple, juices spurting. “I don’t care what she writes about me. I only did it to help with the money.”

“That confidence, remarkable,” Pastor Ragnar said admiringly, seeming to chew on something less tangible than an apple. “Always remember, Hally, sometimes in life you do it for love. Other times you do it for money. You must settle up with your choices. Never make the mistake of confusing the two. You’ll be a lot happier that way . . . ” Pastor Ragnar counseled, picking up his teacup and blowing on the rising steam, watching it disperse into the air around him. “. . . or not.”
